Please tell us a brief info about yourself.
My name is Emily Nguyen and I was born in California. I’m currently majoring in Pharmacological Chemistry at University of California: San Diego. I’m mostly a quiet person, but depending on the situation, I can be quite loud and enthusiastic.

Tell us about your humble beginnings, When did you you first realized that you wanted to be an artist?
I’ve been drawing, or should I say doodling since I was very young, but starting when I was eight years old, I was labeled as the class artist. Most of my classmates praised my work, so I was fueled to improve and draw more.
What are your tools of the trade: mouse, tablet, brush or pen and ink or pencil? and why?
Lately I’ve been using a mouse quite heavily because I thought it would improve my artistic skills and versatility. I also had an ideal that a strong artist can handle difficult tools.
But I must say, I much prefer the pen and pencil because of their simplicity.

Who or what gives you inspiration?
Classical French and Italian artists, Manga Artists, Tetsuya Nomura, Yoshitaka Amano, and of course, Deviantart.
Is your artistic background self-taught or did you go to college to study?
My inspiration is more so out of passion, observation, and random information from non-artistic sources. I don’t go to Art college, nor do I read tutorials or “How to Draw” books.

How do you keep “fresh” within your industry?
One should always look for something that no one else has gone through yet, or if very few people have done it before.
What are some of your current projects?
I’m thinking about Disney as usual, but I might go into the realm of ….famous puppets!

Which of your works are you the most proud of? And why?
I’m really not sure of it, but most of them are from 2003 and are in traditional medium.
Are there any areas, techniques, mediums, projects in your field that you have yet to try?
I have yet to try glass making, metal bending, wood carving, hair cutting/ styling, house making, cooking (Ace of Cakes style!), ballet, and karate! I know my list sounds ridiculous, but all of these are actually art forms!

What do you do to keep yourself motivated and avoid burn-out?
Don’t rush and don’t procrastinate. I draw at my own pace and listen to inspirational music.

When you’re not in front of your canvas or monitor, how do you spend most of your free time?
I enjoy going on the Internet to find random Youtube videos, information, and art. I also enjoy music and take long walks to see the scenery. Though what I like most is to pace around and live in my subconscious.

and finally, What advices/tips can you give to the novice designers/ illustrators out there?
Observe your surroundings as carefully as you can. Also when using traditional tools, mix colors into whatever you wish.
