Featured Artist for the Week – Jonathan Liang

Jonathan Liang or “Toounit” is an extra ordinary artist from Malaysia who use Copic Sketch Markers to make his stunning artworks. Ever since he was 4 he decided that he’d devote his entire life to art.

please tell us a brief info about yourself.
Name: Jonathan Liang
Born: Malaysia
When did you first realized that you wanted to be an artist?
- Ever since I was 4 I decided that I’d devote myself to art.

What are your tools of the trade: mouse, tablet, brush or pen and ink or pencil? and why?
- I use Copic Sketch Markers and I don’t quite have a reason why, but I seem to be very comfortable with just this media.

Who or what gives you inspiration?
- People who give me inspiration would be Anthony Goicela, Floria Sigismondi, Yves Mathieu-Saint Laurent, Uatda Hikaru, Ogure Ito, Patrick Demarchelier, Jamie Hewlett, Family & Friends. Architectures are my inspirations too

Is your artistic background self-taught or did you go to college to study?
- I learned everything on my own. Then enrolled into an art college a year ago doing fine arts, but then transfered to Fashion Design.

How do you keep “fresh” within your industry?
- I constantly try to change my style of colouring (Though that hardly is successful) and come up with eccentric concepts, which is my fav. I like drawing busy pictures with a lot to look at.

What are some of your current projects?
- Currently working on S.T.E.A.L saga and my personal doujin. Some other freelance jobs are still in discussion.

Which of your works are you the most proud of? And why?
- None really, Never was really proud of my work, I just wanna keep improving.
Are there any areas, techniques, mediums, projects in your field that you have yet to try?
- Of course, and it’s uncountable! I have not tried so many styles and mediums and techniques yet.

What do you do to keep yourself motivated and avoid burn-out?
- Music? I get lazy 99% of the time.

When you’re not in front of your canvas or monitor, how do you spend most of your free time?
- I hang out with my friends a lot. I’m out of the house most of the time.
and finally, What advices/tips can you give to the novice designers/ illustrators out there?
- Everyone can draw, it’s just about practice. Just look around more and you’ll see that anything can inspire you too!
